There are a number of reissue thumbwheels on the market that are somewhat close but none are correct. This is because the exact knurling tool that was used for the original '50s thumbwheels is no longer in use. We took measurements and inspected every detail on an original set of ‘50s thumbwheels provided by Burst authority, Charlie Daughtry (Thank you Charlie. You rock!). We even counted the number of teeth on the originals and matched that! Then, we made a brand-new knurling tool that is the only of its kind.
Gibson Historic reissues ship from the factory with thicker steel wheels that add unnecessary brightness. These wheels are the correct thickness and weight—made of nickel-plated brass with no copper under the nickel to give you vintage tone and appearance.
