Wiring Harness for Gibson USA Les Paul • Jimmy Page Number One Wiring • Vintage Drifted Black Beauties or Bumblebees
“...I customized my Number Two Les Paul, which again is a real old vintage one too. That gave me a combination of all of these, but it’s a little fussy because all of these are push/pulls and it had switches here and everything. But the reality of it was the thing that I found most important to me was the fact that you can reverse the phase on these. By reversing the phase you get a close approximation of the sound that Peter Green would get, and certainly B.B. King…”
When I used think of Jimmy Page wiring I thought of all the bells and whistles on Number Two. But he makes it clear in the video that he never fully bonded with all of the changes and prefers the one push/pull pot that reverses the phase of the pickups when both are selected. He chose this single mod to carry over to Number One.
We're proud to offer our Jimmy Page Number One wiring harness for your Gibson USA Les Paul. We've done most of the work for you so it's easy to install in your guitar. And it works with any pickup, including models with vintage braided leads. You do not need a four-conductor pickup!
We build these with your choice of drifted 1960 Black Beauties (shown) or late-50s mylar or PIO (paper in oil) Bumblebees. Typically, the Black Beauties are chosen for Les Paul Classics for their 1960 vibe and the Bees are selected for Les Paul Traditionals and other models since they have more of a '59 feel. These capacitors are a great way to get authentic vintage tone for about the same price as other harnesses with reissue caps. For more information on these vintage drifted capacitors, read our blog post here.
Both mylar and PIO Bees were used on Gibson guitars in the late 50s. The PIO caps cost more to source, so they're considered an upgrade over mylar, though both are vintage correct. PIO is easy to identify by the small tube on one end that was used to add the oil during manufacturing (see photos).
An optional Woman Tone mod is available on all of our harnesses for Gibson USA guitars at no additional cost. Woman Tone refers to the smooth, dark sound associated with Clapton's lead tone in the late 60s. We install a lower value cap (.01 range) in the neck position. By selecting the neck pickup and rolling the tone knob all the way off, you can quickly dial in with this harness. Please make your capacitor selection from the menu at the top of this description.
We use the finest CTS pots with 30% vintage-taper volumes and 20% tones for the smoothest rolloff on each pot. Tolerance is less than 10% all the way around.
We offer them in your choice of long- or short-shaft pots. Long shafts fit recent Les Paul Standards, Traditionals, Classics, Studios, etc. Short shafts fit Les Paul Specials and some Studio models. They will also fit Historic reissues. Please make your selection from the menu at the top of this description.
Priced as a full set which includes everything you need to completely rewire your guitar: two vintage capacitors, four CTS pots, a Switchcraft nickel toggle switch with pre-measured vintage braided wire, shrink tubing, and jack, pre-wired and ready to install. Please note that our caps are selected based on what they read now, not their original readings, so the color of the stripes on the Bees will vary.
Wiring diagram included. Made in USA.
